PAN card misuse: how to check, report and stop it

Yes. A PAN number can't move money on its own, since no PIN or OTP is attached, but a PAN copy sent with your Aadhaar, a selfie and a cheque can be used to try a loan in your name. Check your free credit reports and your AIS, report misuse on cybercrime.gov.in or 1930, then dispute it in writing.

How it works in five steps

  1. Step 1: Pull your credit reports

Each of the four bureaus, CIBIL, Experian, Equifax and CRIF High Mark, must give you one full report free every calendar year: look for loans, cards or enquiries you don't recognise.

  2. Step 2: Read your AIS

On the income tax e-filing portal, open your Annual Information Statement, which lists what is reported against your PAN, and give feedback on any entry that isn't yours.

  3. Step 3: Report it

File a complaint on cybercrime.gov.in and note the acknowledgement number, call 1930 if money was taken, and ask your local police for an FIR.

  4. Step 4: Write to the lender

Tell the lender in writing that the loan isn't yours, attach your police complaint and ask for its KYC record.

  5. Step 5: Dispute it with the bureaus

Raise a dispute with each bureau that shows the account, and if 30 days pass without a fix, complain to the RBI Integrated Ombudsman at cms.rbi.org.in after checking its time limit.

How can a PAN card be misused?

PAN is meant to be quoted: banks, employers, brokers and sellers of big purchases ask for it so those deals are tied to your name. Under the old Rule 114B that included depositing more than ₹50,000 in cash at a bank in one day, buying property worth more than ₹10 lakh and buying anything worth more than ₹2 lakh. A new Income-tax Act replaced the 1961 Act on 1 April 2026, so some limits may have changed.

The number on its own has no PIN or OTP and can't move money. The risk is a full copy. A PAN card shows your photo, date of birth, parent's name and signature. Sent with an Aadhaar copy, a selfie and a cancelled cheque, it is most of what a fraudster needs to try a loan in your name with a lender that doesn't verify properly. It shows up as recovery calls, or as a line on your credit report you don't know.

So yes, a PAN card can be misused without your OTP, because PAN has none. Banks must verify ID against the original or through digital checks. The credit alerts and free reports below exist because not every lender is that careful.

Hinglish: PAN card ka misuse kaise hota hai?
Koi aapki PAN copy, Aadhaar copy, selfie aur cheque lekar aapke naam par loan lene ki koshish kar sakta hai, aise lender se jo theek se verify nahi karta. Sirf PAN number se paisa nahi nikalta.

How to check PAN card misuse online

Your credit reports show loans. RBI makes each of the four bureaus (CIBIL, Experian, Equifax, CRIF High Mark) give you one full report free every calendar year. Each bureau gives its own, so you can spread the four across the year. Look for loans, cards or enquiries you don't recognise.

Your Annual Information Statement shows the rest. Log in to the income tax e-filing portal and open AIS: it lists interest, dividends, large purchases and more reported against your PAN. If an entry isn't yours, you can give feedback on it. Form 26AS on TRACES now shows only tax deducted or collected at source, so AIS is the fuller view.

Since 2024, RBI circular 2023-24/73 also requires the bureaus to send you an SMS or email when a lender pulls your report. Keep your current mobile and email on file with them, and act on a "your credit report was accessed" alert you didn't expect.

My PAN card is misused: how to report it

Report it first: call 1930 if money was taken, file on cybercrime.gov.in, and ask your local police for an FIR. Then write to the lender named on your credit report, raise a dispute with each bureau that shows the account, and keep copies of every complaint and reply.

If your income tax e-filing account was misused, the Income Tax Department's misuse page says to report to the police first and attach that complaint when you write to it. Change your e-filing password and check its registered mobile and email.

Writing the letters is the hard part. ID misused: what to do has the free steps in order, and a one-time ₹299 kit: ten ready-to-fill letters and sheets in English and Hindi (lender complaint, KYC record request, dispute letters for CIBIL, Experian, Equifax and CRIF High Mark, cybercrime complaint text, RBI Integrated Ombudsman complaint, case timeline, attachment checklist). They are templates and steps, not legal advice. A letter does not remove an entry or find who did it.

Can a lost PAN card be misused?

Yes, the same way a copy can. Whoever finds it has your name, photo, date of birth, parent's name and signature, though still no PIN or OTP. You can't recall it, so watch for what it gets used for.

Pull one of your four free credit reports every few months, keep your mobile and email current so lender alerts reach you, and check your AIS. If anything shows up that isn't yours, follow the report steps above.

The e-PAN PDF is the official digital card. If you applied through Protean, it can be emailed to you: free up to three times within 30 days of allotment or an update, and ₹8.26 after that.

How to stop PAN card misuse

You can't make a copy useless, but you can send fewer of them and tie each one to its purpose. We couldn't find an official masked PAN like masked Aadhaar, so the purpose note does most of the work.

  • Share PAN only when a real transaction needs it. A recruiter before an interview, a delivery agent, a "customer care" caller, a prize message or a loan agent outside a lender's own app has no need for it.
  • Send the e-PAN PDF, not a phone photo, through the requester's portal or official email.
  • Write who it is for and the date across it. For a photo of the card, the free ID copy masker stamps that line in your browser without uploading the image. It doesn't open PDFs.
  • Don't send PAN, Aadhaar and a cheque together unless the form asks for all three, and never post your PAN in a group.
  • If an Aadhaar copy went with it, check your Aadhaar authentication history for the last 6 months and lock your biometrics on myAadhaar. OTP checks still work, so never share an Aadhaar OTP.
  • Next time, send the copy as a link that opens once, from the tool at the top of this page, instead of a chat attachment. It is encrypted in your browser and deleted after the first download; unopened, it expires after 1 hour, 24 hours or 7 days. The person who opens it can still save it.
Hinglish: PAN card fraud se kaise bache?
PAN sirf tab do jab koi asli transaction maange. Copy par kiske liye aur date likho, aur PAN, Aadhaar aur cheque ek saath mat bhejo.

Honest limits

  • Credit reports and AIS show misuse after it happens; they don't block it.
  • A dispute asks the lender and the bureau to remove an entry, only they can do it, and some lenders take longer than 30 days.
  • Nothing here finds who used your PAN or recalls a copy you already sent.
  • A Burn File link opens once, but whoever opens it can still save, forward or photograph your PAN.

Questions

Can a PAN card be misused without OTP?

Yes. PAN has no OTP or PIN of its own, so someone with your PAN copy, an Aadhaar copy and a selfie can try a loan with a lender that doesn't verify properly. RBI makes credit bureaus alert you by SMS or email when a lender pulls your report, so keep your mobile and email current with them.

What is the PAN card misuse complaint number?

Call 1930 if money was taken from you, and file a complaint on cybercrime.gov.in, keeping the acknowledgement number. If a bank won't fix it, RBI's complaint portal is cms.rbi.org.in and its contact centre is 14448. If your Aadhaar was used too, call UIDAI on 1947.

How do I check how many loans are on my PAN card?

Get your credit report from all four bureaus: CIBIL, Experian, Equifax and CRIF High Mark. Each gives its own full report free once a calendar year, so you can check all four at once or spread them across the year.

Can someone take a loan on my PAN card?

They can try. A PAN copy sent with an Aadhaar copy, a selfie and a cancelled cheque is most of what a fraudster needs to apply with a lender that doesn't verify properly. It shows up as recovery calls or as a credit report line you don't know.

How do I remove a fraud loan from my CIBIL report?

Raise a dispute with CIBIL and mark the account as not yours; CIBIL asks the lender to verify it. Write to the lender yourself too, with your police complaint. If the account is still there after 30 days, you can complain to the RBI Integrated Ombudsman.

Is there a masked PAN card like masked Aadhaar?

We couldn't find one. The Income Tax Department offers e-PAN, but no official version that hides digits the way masked Aadhaar does. PAN 2.0, approved in 2024, adds a dynamic QR code, and its FAQ mentions no masked PAN either.
