What to cover
- Aadhaar
- The first 8 digits of the number, everywhere it's printed. UIDAI's own masked Aadhaar shows only the last 4. Cover the QR code too unless they need to scan it: it holds your name, address, gender, date of birth, photo and the last 4 digits. 1: UIDAI: Aadhaar Online Services (masked Aadhaar, secure QR code) (opens in a new tab)
- PAN
- Only what this person doesn't need, such as your date of birth, photo or signature. Keep the PAN number if they asked for it.
Have UIDAI's masked e-Aadhaar? Use that
UIDAI offers masking only in the e-Aadhaar PDF, which you can download free from My Aadhaar with an OTP on your registered mobile. This tool is for the photo, scan or photocopy you already have. 1: UIDAI: Aadhaar Online Services (masked Aadhaar, secure QR code) (opens in a new tab)2: UIDAI: My Aadhaar (Download Masked Aadhaar) (opens in a new tab)
Why a solid box, not blur
Blurred or pixelated digits can sometimes be guessed, since there are only ten of them. A solid box replaces those pixels in your copy. The saved file is a new image drawn by your browser, so it carries none of the photo's hidden details, like location or camera (EXIF).
Your image stays on this device
The page opens, covers, stamps and saves the image inside your browser. The image is never sent anywhere: there is no upload, and our visit counter never sees the file.
Check it yourself: once the page has loaded, turn off your internet. Everything still works.
What it can't do
- A watermark discourages reuse. It can't stop anyone from photographing, cropping or editing the copy.
- Masking hides pixels in this copy only. Your card and any copy you gave before are unchanged.
- Your name, photo, date of birth and address stay visible unless you cover them.
Questions
Is it safe to blur an Aadhaar card photo?
A solid box is safer than blur, because blurred digits can sometimes be guessed. This tool only uses solid boxes.
Which Aadhaar digits should I hide?
The first 8. UIDAI's masked Aadhaar shows only the last 4 digits of the number.
How do I put a watermark on an Aadhaar card copy?
Add the image, type what it's for, who it's for and the date, then download. The line repeats diagonally across the whole image.
Does a watermark stop misuse?
No. It shows what the copy was given for, which makes reuse harder to pass off. Someone can still photograph, crop or edit it.
