What does self-destructing photo mean?

A self-destructing photo is one that deletes itself after it is viewed once, or when a timer runs out. WhatsApp calls it view once, Instagram a disappearing photo, and Telegram sets a self-destruct timer. It keeps the photo out of the chat and the gallery. It can't stop someone photographing the screen with a second phone.

How it works in four steps

  1. Step 1: Choose the photo

Tap File in the tool above and pick it. Up to 10 files, 50 MB combined, fit in one link.

  2. Step 2: Create the link

Your browser encrypts the photo before upload. The key stays in the link, after the #.

  3. Step 3: Send the link

Tap Share and pick any chat or email. The person needs only a browser, no app or account.

  4. Step 4: It opens once

When they download it, our server deletes it and the link stops working for everyone.

Self destructing photo meaning in Hindi

In Hindi it is a photo that deletes itself: once it has been seen, or once its time is up, it is gone from the chat.

The dictionary word sva-vinashkari (self-destructive) is also used for harmful behaviour; for apps, people say khud mitne wali photo. For messages, timers and how to turn them on, read the Hindi guide to disappearing messages.

Self destructing photo meaning in Telugu

Self destructing photo on Telegram

Telegram calls it a self-destruct timer. In a one-to-one chat, open the photo in the editor before sending and choose how long it stays visible after opening, from View Once to 30 seconds. In secret chats the timer works on every message.

Telegram says saving and screenshots don't work on self-destructing media; its FAQ adds that it will try to notify the sender if a screenshot is taken. Telegram describes it only for one-to-one and secret chats; it doesn't mention groups.

Self-destructing photos on WhatsApp and Instagram

WhatsApp's version is view once, for photos, videos and voice messages. The photo opens once, isn't saved to the gallery, and expires if nobody opens it within 14 days. WhatsApp blocks screenshots of it.

Instagram calls it a disappearing photo or video. Before sending you pick View once, View twice (one replay) or Unlimited views, in the mobile app only, not on computers. Messenger is rolling out its own View once for photos and videos.

Can a self-destructing photo be saved?

Not from inside the app, as a rule, but the same gap stays open everywhere: another phone's camera. WhatsApp's view once page and Signal's disappearing-messages page both say so. Screenshots differ by app. App by app: can someone screenshot view once on Instagram, Telegram, Messenger or Signal.

Honest limits

  • A second phone can photograph any screen, so a self-destructing photo is never proof against a determined viewer.
  • With a NO SUS link the person downloads the photo, and their copy stays on their phone; the link, not the copy, is one-time.
  • A browser can't block screenshots, unlike WhatsApp's view once inside its own app.
  • Whoever opens the link first uses it up, so send it only to the person you mean.
