It depends on the app. WhatsApp and Messenger say a view once photo or video can't be screenshotted or screen-recorded, and Telegram says screenshots don't work on its self-destructing media. Instagram's own help pages contradict each other, and Signal doesn't say either way. In every one of them, a second phone's camera still works: view once keeps a photo out of the chat, not out of someone's hands.
View once screenshots compared (October 2026)
Checked on each company's own help pages and blog on 23 October 2026.
| App | What it's called | Screenshot of a view once photo | Unopened, it expires after | On a computer |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| View once (photos, videos, voice messages) | Blocked, screen recording too | 14 days | Not on WhatsApp Web or Windows | |
| Disappearing photo or video: View once, View twice or Unlimited views | Help pages disagree: "now disabled", or the sender is told if one is detected | Not stated | Not on computers | |
| Messenger | View once (still rolling out) | Blocked, screen recording too | Not stated | Not on computers |
| Telegram | Self-destruct timer, from View Once to 30 seconds | Telegram says screenshots "will not work"; its FAQ says it will try to notify | Not stated | Not stated |
| Signal | View-once media (photos and videos) | Not stated; no alert described | 45 days | Works on Signal Desktop |
WhatsApp has its own deep dive: can WhatsApp view once be screenshotted or saved. Snapchat, Android vs iPhone and computers are in the view-once screenshot table, with a source for every row.
Can someone screenshot view once on Instagram?
Instagram's help centre gives two answers. Its page on the status of a photo you sent says "taking a screenshot is now disabled" for a disappearing photo or video sent in a chat. Its pages on sending and replaying still say the sender can see if a screenshot was detected. The newer line reads like the current rule, but Instagram hasn't cleaned up the old one, so treat the block as likely, not certain.
How it works: before sending, pick View once, View twice (one replay, right after it arrives) or Unlimited views. You can only send one to people who follow you or have approved your messages, and it works in the mobile app only, not on computers.
Vanish mode is different. There, Instagram says people can screenshot or screen-record, and you get a notification if a screenshot is detected.
Can someone screenshot view once on Telegram?
Telegram's self-destruct timer works on photos and videos in one-to-one chats, and on everything in secret chats. In the media editor you choose how long the photo stays visible after opening, "from View Once to 30 seconds". Voice and video messages can be view-once too.
On screenshots, Telegram's 2023 announcement says saving and taking screenshots "will not work" for self-destructing media. Its FAQ is more modest: it "will try" to send a notification if a screenshot is taken. In secret chats Telegram says it tries to alert you, but admits the alerts can be bypassed.
Telegram Premium users also have Disable Sharing (March 2026), which blocks screenshots and saving media in a one-to-one chat.
Can someone screenshot view once on Messenger?
No, according to Meta. On media sent as view once, "others won't be able to save, forward, screenshot or screen record" it. To send one, tap Keep in chat under your photo until it says View once. The feature is "being gradually introduced", so you may not have it yet, and it isn't available on computers.
In end-to-end encrypted chats, Messenger's disappearing messages page says that if it detects a screenshot or screen recording of an end-to-end encrypted chat, everyone in it is notified, and warns that it may not catch them all. Meta announced in 2022 that it was removing vanish mode from Messenger.
Can someone screenshot view-once photos on Signal?
Signal doesn't say. Its View Once Media page describes photos and videos that are deleted from the chat after they're viewed, in one-to-one and group chats, on phones and Signal Desktop. It mentions no screenshot block and no alert.
The setting people mix up with this is Screen Security. It stops screenshots of Signal on your own device only, and Signal says plainly that it does not stop someone else taking one on theirs.
One number worth knowing: an unopened view-once photo is deleted 45 days after it was sent, or sooner if a disappearing-message timer runs out first.
Is there a view once photo screenshot app?
Apps and videos that promise to save view once photos are common. We have not verified any, and none of these companies documents a way around its own block. An app that wants access to your WhatsApp, Instagram or Telegram account is a bigger risk than the photo you'd save. The one method every app admits works is the plainest: another phone's camera.
What view once can't stop
- A photo or video of the screen, taken with another device. WhatsApp's view once page and Signal's disappearing-messages page both say so.
- Someone who reads it aloud, retypes it or remembers it.
- Screenshots where the app only notifies: a notice tells you after the fact, it doesn't stop the copy.
Sending a document or file once instead
View once in these apps covers photos and videos, and in some apps voice messages too; none of them lists documents or PDFs. For those, a one-time link works in any of these apps: paste the link, and it stops working after the first open. NO SUS Burn Files sends up to 10 files, 50 MB combined, encrypted in your browser before upload, with no account for either person. It has the opposite trade-off to these apps: a browser can't block screenshots, so the reader can capture what they open. How it works on WhatsApp: send a view once PDF.
